You’ve gotta see this.
Newfound Road, whose Same Old Place (Amazon) is among my favorite bluegrass(ish) releases of 2009, covers Bill Withers’ breakthrough 1971 pop and R&B hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Impressive. The quality of the sound and video on the clip is excellent, so it’s very much worth 3:45 of your time. Just hit ‘Play’ and thank me later.

Sometimes “newgrass” oversteps the boundaries of what works with the format, and this is one of those times. Attempted bluegrass covers of rock and pop tunes usually fall flat unless the genius of Del McCoury is directly involved. My favorite bluegrass album (which Leeann doesn’t rate so highly) is 3 Fox Drive’s “Listen To The Music” and to me the weakest cut by quite a margin is the title track cover of the Doobie Brothers song. I’ve been listening to Bill Withers’ version of this song since it was released and this is a song that’s not to be trifled with. On the other hand I would love to hear what The Steeldrivers could do with this song….
Hey, hey, now, I like Three Fox Drive just fine. They’re just not on my absolute favorites list, because I don’t find them overly imaginative. I do like New Found Road though. So, thank you.:)
