On the Spot #4
A freelance writer and humorist with an abiding love of country music, C.M. Wilcox's cutting, clear-eyed take on the genre has drawn the attention of Country Weekly, The Washington Post, and The Tennessean in the years since this site began. He lives near Sacramento and can be reached by email at CMW (at) countrycalifornia.com.

8. Dolly Parton, “The Lonesomes”
9. Martina McBride, “Whatever You Say”
10. High School Musical Cast, “We’re All In This Together” (Again? Seriously? Why is this still on my iPod anyway)
Wow, my iPod is just determined to embarrass me today! Some of these are songs that I hardly ever listen to anymore. Hopefully I’ll do better on the next shuffle.
Don’t worry, Ben, wait until you see my list.
What this game proves to me is that I don’t buy much music these days – I have 494 songs in my itunes, counting music videos. Ever since a stupid user error erased a few thousand songs and forced me to start over, I have bought less. I listen to a lot of country, but it’s almost all via Pandora, SiriusXM, and other online radio. The second thing this game shows me is that the songs I DO have come out really gay when shuffled. I am not gay, but apparently my mp3 and mp4 collection is.

I have a single GaGa song on my iPod (“Telephone” – hey, it’s catchy), and it thankfully didn’t come up on this shuffle. I’ve actually pretty much outgrown High School Musical by now, but was oblivious to the fact that a few of those songs were still on my iPod!

Question to some of you, including the host: Do you only like country music, or were you excluding other genres? Just curious.
Can’t speak for anyone else, obviously, but my lists weren’t filtered by genre. I find bits I like in all types of music, but as far as what I collect and listen to regularly, it’s mostly country.
I guess the fact that I listen to music literally 9 hours a day leads me to seek out other genres a great deal. Country is my default favorite though.
