The Devil Makes Three Do Wrong Right Giveaway
6/20: Random winner chosen. You’ve got mail, CJ.
Last week, reader KathyP scored an autographed copy of the new Chuck Mead album Journeyman’s Wager. I’m a big fan of that album, so I encourage anyone interested to pick up a copy from Amazon or your other music store of choice and get listening.
This week, the good people at Milan Records have provided a copy of the new album from The Devil Makes Three, Do Wrong Right. If you’ve been paying attention, you can probably guess that I’m pretty excited about this one. I was already evangelizing for it before the record company got in touch with me, so I’m glad that they want to give you the chance to hear it too.
Early last month, I wrote of the album:
More than anything else, this record has finally captured the vitality of the trio, an electrifying quality most obviously on display in some of its lighter fare. “Gracefully Facedown” (alcoholism never sounded so good) and “Do Wrong Right” are both quirky, good-humored party songs, but neither can beat “For Good Again” for utter charm. The tale of a ragtag bunch of buddies who decide to start up their own band, it features some of the most hilarious lyrics you’ll find this side of Todd Snider and John Prine.
Then I took to The 9513, where I chose Do Wrong Right as my Staff Pick of April:
I have to give the nod for April to The Devil Makes Three, whose latest sounds like a breakthrough album. A vintage mixture of string band, ragtime, folk and blues shot through with a youthful vitality, this could be the soundtrack to your next tipsy night on the town. Fans of Justin Townes Earle and Old Crow Medicine Show are particularly advised to pick this one up posthaste.
Farce the Music liked it too, so I guess I’m in pretty good company.
To enter for a chance to win a copy of the album (and hear what all the fuss is about), just comment with the name of a band or artist that you’ve discovered recently. I figure The Devil Makes Three will probably be pretty new to most readers, so this is just a way of finding out what else you’ve had your ears on lately.
Comments will be accepted through Friday, then a winner will be chosen at random. We’ll jump right into the next giveaway on Saturday, so keep reading for more chances to win good stuff.
Prefer email? Nothing wrong with that!

I’m a bit late to the party but thanks to a mention in Country Standard Time I picked up a copy of “Hearts In My Dream” by NYC based Lil Mo (Monica Passin) and The Monicats from 1999. I was intrigued to hear what honky tonk and hillbilly music from a long time NYC resident would sound like (JTE doesn’t count as a recent transplant) and I’m really enjoying it. Monica’s voice won’t appeal to everyone but that nasally twang really works when she belts out “Twice The Lovin’ (In Half The Time)”, a three minute slice of old time honky tonk heaven. Hey CM, how about a review and giveaway of Monica’s new release “On The Moon”? (Shameless, aren’t I?)
Other obscure recent notables: Brennen Leigh’s “The Devil’s On My Trail”. Another fine female purveyor of old time hillbilly and honky tonk music done right. Also “Girls, Guns & Glory”’s album “Inverted Valentine” where Dwight Yoakam meets Chris Isaak. A Boston area regional favorite that’s far more interesting musically than the multitude of similar bands down in Texas…
PS – If any of the winners of The 9513 giveaway enter here, I’m going to send Justin Moore over to kick their ass! (lol)
I’m a recent convert to Charlie Robison, as I’ve mentioned over at The9513.
I’m not entering, however, since you and Trailer already convinced me to buy the album. Whoever wins will be getting one great album though!
I recently heard tell of the band “Terry Anderson and the Olympic Ass-Kicking Team” and I loved the name of the band so much I hoped their music would live up to that great name. Fortunately it does.
Two of my new discoveries are James McMurtry and Lucero. I don’t know how I missed out on either for so long. Better late than never, I suppose. A little more “rock” than a lot of the things I usually listen to, but I am enjoying both a great deal. I can’t stop playing “Raising Hell.”
I’m glad you have discovered Charlie Robison, Leeann. I saw him do a show at the Hills Cafe in Austin about two years ago. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.
I also just learned about Aubrey Auld when doing a search for Bill Chambers (Kasey Chambers’ dad who is also a great artist). I love the stuff she does that can be found on a compilation called Reckless Garage Sale, which, incidentally, includes Bill Chambers too. I’ve looked into her regular albums and really love the country stuff, but have been picking and choosing tracks due to some pop-ness on some of them.
Oops…Audrey?
I should add that the stuff on Reckless Garage Sale is very country.
Levon Helm….awsome.
I’m gonna have to say Ryan Beaver. This kid just started making a little ruckus around Austin. I hear a ton of new stuff, but he strikes me as one that has a long career ahead of him. If you haven’t heard any of it, go check out Under the Neons. That is a great song! I’m willing to bet that his name with become familiar among the Texas scene real soon.
Jeannie Brannon and Miss Leslie have been recent discoveries for me. Jeannie has been around for at least 20 years but is very good and should have been successful earlier
