Live Blogging 30 Minutes of Country Radio

The ACM Awards are coming up in just a few weeks. I’ll be live blogging the event on Pacific Time for the benefit of all you West Coasters (and for my own entertainment), so I figured it might be a good idea to get those live blogging muscles in shape for the big event. As part of my training regimen, I turned on my local country station for a half hour during the lunch hour and typed away. I might do it another time or two between now and showtime on April 5, so feel free to recommend a time of day that I should tune in for optimal suckage.

  • 12:36 PM: Turning on the radio
  • 12:36 PM: And I’m right in the middle of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” by Bon Jovi and Nettles.
  • 12:37 PM: I actually kind of like this song, but it’s not so promising that the very first song I hear features the very non-country Bon Jovi.
  • 12:38 PM: And right into Jake Owen “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You”
  • 12:38 PM: So many cliches in this song
  • 12:40 PM: I think houses on the hill full of life’s finer things are overrated too, but that doesn’t make me like this song.
  • 12:41 PM: Whew, it’s over.
  • 12:41 PM: “Who’s Cheatin’ Who” by AJ
  • 12:41 PM: This might be the best song that will come on in this time block.
  • 12:43 PM: Reminds me of my nosy neighbors.
  • 12:44 PM: My other neighbors across the street have about 400 cars parked in front of their house all the time, so I’ve given up on figuring out whose car is parked next door or anywhere on the street.
  • 12:45 PM: They’re playing an awful lot of music. I was expecting to be complaining about radio DJs the whole time.
  • 12:45 PM: Not sure what this song is. Sounds like Billy Ray.
  • 12:46 PM: It is Billy Ray. “Back to Tennessee”
  • 12:48 PM: This could be an okay song, but the production is way too dense for my taste. Makes it boring.
  • 12:49 PM: News time… traffic, Wall Street
  • 12:50 PM: Oh no. Rascal Flatts and Rodney Atkins ahead… after these commercials
  • 12:50 PM: Fertility center ad
  • 12:50 PM: Ad for Fox shows on Wednesday nights
  • 12:51 PM: Ad for car dealership
  • 12:51 PM: So I guess the demographic is infertile American Idol fans without cars
  • 12:52 PM: Now an ad for Mexican vacations, which you’ll need as you try to pay off that car
  • 12:53 PM: Comcast HD ad seemed to go on forever
  • 12:54 PM: Dwight Yoakam is going to be at the Silver Legacy in Reno on March 20
  • 12:54 PM: That’ll be a good show
  • 12:54 PM: Another car dealership commercial
  • 12:56 PM: This commercial break is neverending
  • 12:56 PM: Carl’s Jr. commercial
  • 12:56 PM: Luke Bryan coming to this area soon. I saw him in concert. He’s goofy.
  • 12:56 PM: Aand here comes Rascal Flatts
  • 12:57 PM: “Me and My Gang”
  • 12:58 PM: Personally, I blame Dann Huff.
  • 12:59 PM: They live to rock and rock to live, y’all.
  • 1:00 PM: I wonder if I could turn on the radio for 30 minutes at any hour of the day and not hear a Rascal Flatts song.
  • 1:00 PM: The question now is: Will they squeeze in a Chesney song before the time is up?
  • 1:00 PM: Just a few minutes left.
  • 1:00 PM: Hey!
  • 1:00 PM: It’s Lee Ann Womack “Last Call”
  • 1:01 PM: Such a great song and performance
  • 1:02 PM: Country radio should be more like this. All the time.
  • 1:04 PM: I hate how they keep interrupting songs to tell me that I’m hearing uninterrupted music (“one extra long star set”)
  • 1:04 PM: Well, not anymore. You just blew it with your talking.
  • 1:04 PM: Keith Urban “You Look Good in My Shirt”
  • 1:04 PM: I heard his new one a couple days ago… “Kiss a Girl”
  • 1:04 PM: “Shirt” is much better
  • 1:07 PM: I think my time is just about up.
  • 1:07 PM: As I end, the song they’re starting is…
  • 1:07 PM: “It’s America” by Rodney Atkins
  • 1:07 PM: I’m escaping just in the nick of time!

  1. Yes! “Last Call”! I love that song…

  2. genius! your live blogging skills are far greater than the bow-hunting skills of Napolean Dynamite! I too find it odd that stations interrupt themselves to tell us they bring interrupted sets of music….

  3. Great idea. I’m glad that you are “training” for the upcoming ACMs. AS for the music, I hate to say it, but I think you got a better than average 30-minute block. “Who’s Cheatin’ Who” and “Last Call” and even the Keith Urban song are better than the stuff I get on my lunch hour.

Remember that “Who’s Cheatin’ Who” video with all the Nascar drivers pretending to play the instruments and Alan coming onto the track with a monster truck. It got old after awhile, but it was funny the first few times.

    • It was definitely above average. I’ll try a different part of the day next time. Every other time I’ve turned on the radio recently, they’ve been playing Richie McDonald or David Nail or Adam Gregory, who are all appearing together at some show here pretty soon. Ugh.

Forgot about that Alan Jackson video. Kinda funny.

      • I’m in Florida right now, and their radio station is awesome. I’ve heard “Last Call”, “Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way” and a ton of other great songs… All the stations in Cincinnati only play Rascal Flatts- and we have 4.

  4. Awesome!! See? You *are* a genius! I blame Dann Huff too! Always.

  5. Chris D. is down in the tropics where the radio stations are good. I’m in Nashville this weekend – and I did listen to The Big 98, but they were playing the syndicated After Midnite show. We heard ‘I Saw The Light’ by Wynonna and Big and Rich’s ‘Lost In This Moment’ before I put in a CD.

Really great idea – radio blogging. I wish I had thought of it first!
