Thanks, David. This is one of my favorite things I've written here, so I'm glad people are still discovering it.

Great blog! I know I'm writing this three months after it was written, but it really is a very thought provoking piece of work. And that's very poignant about the Randy CD. Strange how things turn out.

Kevin's enthusiasm for Snider did get me to give him a try and I thoroughly enjoy him as a result. Ultimately, I think it's the suggestions that inspire me to give an artist a try, which does not always mean that I will end up liking what I'm trying, of course.

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful replies. This article has been in the works for a while and I finally just got so tired of looking at it that I hit Publish. Needless to say, it's nice to see it get such a warm reception right off the bat. I'm very much enjoying reading your responses, so keep 'em coming.

Nice article. It can work in both directions, of course. Some comments Johhny Bush made at a show turned me onto Amber Digby, Cornell Hurd and Justin Trevino. On the other hand, I really discovered Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills through Merle Haggard, something for which I have been eternally grateful to the Hag

Then there are artists who just never will click for you. I love the ROSES IN THE SNOW and LIVE AT THE RYMAN albums, but other than that I have only a moderate interest in Emmylou Harris - I have bunches of her stuff but the two albums listed above are the only two I really listen to very much at all

Kevin at Country Universe is a big fan of Todd Snider but he is one artist I can't warm up to at all - ditto for Kim Richey, Lucinda Williams, Drive By Truckers and numerous others.

For almost any artist to grab me there has to be something about their voice that appeals to me which is why I am ambivalent about Emmylou - to me she is the perfect harmony singer, but not an especially compelling solo artist. Also, I must be able to hear the voclist without strain - nothing turns me off more quickly than a backing band that seesm hell-bent on drowning out the lead vocals, the primary problem with Shannon Brown's album

Ultimately, music remains a very personal experience. Either it will connect with you or it won't. And as much as I may extol the virtues of Jim Lauderdale as an singer and writer, his material either will resonate with you, or not. All I can do is to make you aware of his existance - the rest is up to you

My thoughts exactly! Excellent post!!

I can think of two recent instances of music hitting me the right way when I had previously ignored or disliked it.

Emmylou Harris is probably my biggest conversion story. Because I knew she was an icon, I gave it my best and most honest effort to like her, but I just couldn't get it. When Kevin kept mentioning her on Country Universe, I was pretty much like "Okay, I know I should like her, but I don't." Then a friend sent me her Live At The Ryman CD because Jon Randall sings in her band and we both love Randall. I fell in love with the CD and thought of Kevin's enthusiasm and thought, "OKay, maybe I should just give her one more try." So, I took his Favorite Songs By Favorite Artists list and started from there. And I've been a Emmylou Harris disciple ever since, which hasn't even been a year yet, but it feels like forever.

I actually didn't like Jamey Johnson either. His "The Dollar" song really didn't do anything for me a few years ago when I heard it. However, people at The9513 kept talking him up and it worked. I gave him another chance and he clicked with me.

I have so many other examples too.

I'm guilty of doing the same thing--buying albums and not really even listening to them for awhile. Then I'll finally hear it one day and wonder why I hadn't ever connected to it before.

I still haven't connected with Dale Watson though. Maybe someday.:)

Again, great post. It his full of truths that we as bloggers must remember.

Hey, you're the one who turned me onto Robbie Fulks!

--Leeann

PS. As I think you already know, that Travis album is my favorite of his.

If you won't nominate this post for one of the best blog posts of 2008, I will. It's excellent pieces like this that demonstrate why Country California is a daily read for me (and I'm sure many others). I wish I had something more insightful to add, but instead I'll simply offer my appreciation and agreement.
