Country California

Country music. Seriously.

Down the Mountain, Through the Woods

I got an advance copy of Donna Ulisse’s Walk This Mountain Down some time ago. I don’t have time to review every album that comes in – and I try to make that clear to people before they send me stuff – but I have been meaning to review this album because it’s really, really solid. So solid that it inspired me to seek out her earlier bluegrass album, When I Look Back, almost immediately. And that doesn’t happen very often.

But albums don’t review themselves (with the possible exception of albums by Rascal Flatts, which seem almost like self-parodies), and this one has just been sitting on my shelf. I might still do something on it, but for now I’ll advise you to go check out the review by Occasional Hope at My Kind of Country, which sums up my feelings pretty well. They’re doing great work at MKoC, so check the rest of the blog out too if you haven’t already.

And do give Donna Ulisse a listen on Myspace. She’s good.

  1. Wow. Praise from Caesar.

    Thanks, man.

  2. Rascal Flatts is the best :) I love them.

  3. Donna put out a fine mainstream traditional country album in the early 90′s titled “Trouble At The Door” whcih is well worth buying as used copies are cheap and readily available. The album was too traditional even then for country radio and unfortunately the mix on Donna’s voice is not optimal as it sounds a bit hollow. Good stuff.

  4. Ooops, I should have read the review at MKofC first as my comments are repeititious. Oh well….

  5. Wow. Praise from Caesar.

Ha. Caesar, huh? Thanks for making me spit up my breakfast.

    Not a problem, J.R. You’re doing a bang-up job.

I should pick up a copy of Trouble at the Door. Thanks for the reminder, Rick.

  6. “Thanks for making me spit up my breakfast.”

    Ew!:)

  7. I didn’t realize Caesar triggered the gag reflex. It won’t happen again.

  8. Not so much Caesar as me being likened to him. I’m like a jester at best. :-P
