Darius Rucker on Going Gold: “That’s Nice”

Darius Rucker, who has sold over 20 million albums to date as part of Hootie & the Blowfish, was thrilled to learn of the recent gold certification of his debut country album, Learn to Live. “500,000 copies, huh? That’s really something. That’s almost a million. Well, half a million, anyway,” mused Rucker, whose major-label Hootie debut Cracked Rear View shipped 10 million copies within about a year of its 1994 release. “I wasn’t sure what the country music world would think of me, so the success of this album has been really gratifying,” continued Rucker with a wistful sigh. “I mean, 500,000. That’s just incredible,” he repeated, stealing a glance at the heavily-ornamented, gold-encrusted Award Wall in his den. Rucker is excitedly considering where to keep the gold plaque, whether in his Award Overflow in the attic, underneath his bed, or at the bottom of his teenage daughter’s sock drawer: “It might be nice to give her an award for all the sacrifices she has made over the years. Plus she appreciates sparkly things.” Rucker also expressed excitement at the prospect of performing for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of people as one of the opening acts on some other singer’s 2009 tour.
