Certainly, I’m Not the Only One…

… who measures distances traveled by car in terms of number of CDs played during the trip.

My grandma lives exactly one full CD, or 80 minutes, away from here. I’m heading over for a visit today, so here’s a mix of recent-ish (some from last year) and upcoming music that’ll keep me company on the road.

I’m posting this because I like to imagine that you care. Please play along.

1. Lover, Lover – Jerrod Niemann (how have I not gotten sick of this yet?)
2. Route 5 Box 109 – Joe Diffie (his bluegrass album has been pushed back to October, but it’s worth the wait)
3. The Shoebox – Chris Young (hard to resist songs with this rolling sort of tempo, especially for driving)
4. Lonely at the Top – Jamey Johnson (Real Jamey Johnson covers Keith Whitley!)
5. Fiddlin’ Around – Dierks Bentley (I think this would make a good single)
6. Heroin Addict Sister – Elizabeth Cook (among the best-written songs of the year)
7. Hello Mary Lou Goodbye Heart – Dailey and Vincent (Grandma likes the Statler Brothers)
8. Branded – Marty Stuart (pretty much a rewrite of “Branded Man,” but still…)
9. Stuck Like Glue – Sugarland (I’ll be sick of it pretty soon)
10. Hesitation Blues – Willie Nelson w/ Asleep at the Wheel (good fun)
11. Corpus Christi Bay – Todd Snider (Snider covers classic Robert Earl Keen)
12. Gettin’ Drunk and Fallin’ Down – Hank III (story of my life… ha, not really)
13. Finer Things – Derek Hoke (it’s impossible to feel bad while listening to this song)
14. You Ain’t Woman Enough – Joey + Rory (bought “This Song’s for You” just to get the bonus track)
15. Get Through the Day – Eleven Hundred Springs (a celebration of the things that keep us getting by, like alcohol and copious amounts of weed)
16. Staying’s Worse Than Leaving – Sunny Sweeney (think it was going to be the lead single at one point)
17. Along the Way – Gary Allan (not sure if I’d like this sung by anyone else, but he sells it)
18. I’ll Have What She’s Having – Reba McEntire (wish she recorded more like this, less like “Turn On the Radio”)
19. Set ‘Em Up Joe – Jamey Johnson (Vern Gosdin!!!)
20. Restless, Ramblin’ Man – Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons (from last year’s fine Bend in the Road album)
21. Bloody Mary Morning – Mark Chesnutt (one of few Outlaw tracks that made much of an impression)
22. More Where That Came From – Byron Hill (such a cool sound to it)
23. Leavin’ a Lonely Town – Easton Corbin (“hey, isn’t that George Strai…”)
24. In the Gutter Again – Hellbound Glory (yep)

I care. Great playlist. I’m pleased that a couple of my guilty pleasures are on it, “Stuck Like Glue” and “Lover, Lover.”

  2. Juli says:

That’s a good driving mix. If I were your grandma, I’d steal it out of your car.

  3. Brady says:

Sunny Sweeney used to have a demo version of “Staying’s Worse Than Leaving” on her MySpace page that I couldn’t get enough of, but the new studio version doesn’t sound nearly as appealing.

  4. Faye says:

I would love to hear why would you choose a cover done by Todd Snider rather than one of his own masterfully written songs?

  5. Rick says:

The Johnny Rodriguez cover of that REK song kicks Todd “Obamavoter” Snider’s sorry ass all the way into the middle of Corpus Christi Bay…

Of the few songs in that list I’ve actually heard I like most except for the recent songs from Sugarland and Elizabeth Cook. I think I’d stick with Ricky Nelson’s original version of “Hello Mary Lou” though. I’m sure there are some other real good un’s on the list but I’ll likely never know for sure.

As for Brady’s comment about the Sunny Sweeney song, it seems Brett Beavers was trying to make most of the songs on Sunny’s new album sound alike with the exceptions of “Amy” and Jaida Dreyer’s “Fall For Me”. Oh how I wish Sunny was recording in Nashville with Keith Stegall instead!!!!! Dang…

  6. Ben Foster says:

Whenever I’m driving, it’s usually only a matter of time before I play Pam Tillis’s “Deep Down” and Sara Evans’ “Suds in the Bucket.” On my last road jam session, I also rocked out to Patty Loveless’ “I”m That Kind of Girl” and LeAnn Rimes’ “”Nothin’ Better to Do.” Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue” makes my playlist as well.

  7. Leeann says:

I like the Marc Stuart (Steve Earl’s brother-in-law) and the Bastard Sons album quite a bit. Those Jamey Johnson songs are great too. I also love his cover of “For the Good Times.”

  8. J.R. Journey says:

I’m still with you on the 80 minute CDs. I know I should join the rest of the world with their iPods and just plug it into the car stereo, but I’m a little behind. I still burn a lot of mix CDs and yes, I do judge time on the road by how many CDs I’ll need. I saved my most recent playlist – titled ‘Trip to TN’, so I’ll share that with you.

These are all from new album releases (and some singles with no album yet)

    1. Chely Wright – Broken
    2. Chely Wright – Notes To The Coroner
    3. Chely Wright – That Train
    4. Chely Wright – Damn Liar
    5. Chely Wright – Object Of Your Rejection
    6. Mary Chapin Carpenter – I Put My Ring Back On
    7. Mary Chapin Carpenter – The Age of Miracles
    8. Mary Chapin Carpenter – The Way I Feel
    9. Alan Jackson – Hard Hat and a Hammer (I haven’t bought this album yet, but I do have the pre-release teaser singles)
    10. Gary Allan – Get Off On The Pain
    11. Gary Allan – That Ain’t Gonna Fly
    12. Gary Allan – Along The Way
    13. Gary Allan – Long Summer Days
    14. Lady Antebellum – Need You Now
    15. Lady Antebellum – Ready To Love Again
    16. Sugarland – Stuck Like Glue
    17. Jewel – Satisfied
    18. Reba McEntire – Turn On The Radio
    19. Sunny Sweeney – From A Table Away
    20. Trace Adkins – This Ain’t No Love Song

  9. Jen in Tenn says:

Check out the original version of “Lover, Lover.” You will never get sick of it.

Sonia Dada is pretty popular in the Midwest (they’re based in Chicago), and when I was in school I got to see them several times. Hands down, the best live band I have ever seen.
