For those of you who (like me) missed the ACM Girls' Night Out debut of Miranda Lambert's new trio with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, I give you... the Pistol Annies! Hope you're having a joyous holiday. I'll be back with some Quotable snark tomorrow. … [Read more...]
Meet Brock Zeman

His entry in the latest Prime Cuts post attracted a fair bit of attention, so here's Brock Zeman with a different song called "Cindy." Not sure how this guy escaped my attention for so long. Recommended if you like: Steve Earle, Chris Knight, Fred Eaglesmith, old Jack Ingram ballads. His website can be found here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx4j3xxJ-1g … [Read more...]
“I Got a Feeling Called the Blues…”
... but fortunately, so do The Little Willies, as seen in this 2007 clip shot at The Living Room in NYC. "Lovesick Blues" was Hank Williams' first #1 hit, and a song that earned him six encores when he debuted on the Opry.* Coincidentally, I count 6 non-Hank versions in my collection: Charley Pride, Patsy Cline, Floyd Cramer, Dolly/Loretta/Tammy (Honky Tonk Angels), LeAnn Rimes, and George Strait. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9lhNW5fnmY * Blast from the past, discovered via Google: … [Read more...]
“I Can’t Stand a Thing Out of Place…”
It looks like quite a few people have been clicking through to check this one out since I posted about it on Tuesday, so here's a video of Ryan Cook performing "The O.C.D. Blues." As someone who's been getting sidetracked by alphabetizing/organizing projects for as long as I can remember, the subject matter (humorous as it may be) resonates. The album version features some pretty sweet fiddle work, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgjgs5US0no … [Read more...]
RIP Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin
Charlie Louvin passed away this morning from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 83. Here's a great New York Times article from Bill Friskics-Warren. You can also revisit Juli Thanki's 2009 interview, which reveals Mr. Louvin to have been a real gentleman right into the final years of his life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5XVEUdNye0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHqCDueo7ZE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIT0Xe1qaoI … [Read more...]
A Living Prayer for Civility
Can't quite put my finger on why, but Alison Krauss seemed like an appropriate choice for today. Here's one of my absolute favorite songs to hear her perform. There's no such thing as too much of "A Living Prayer." And hey, she has a new album coming out in just a few months! What's your favorite Alison Krauss song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qIVyb0i6yc … [Read more...]
RIP Gary Claxton
I've posted this video of the Austin supergroup Heybale before, but I'm reposting it because I got word (via Miss Leslie) that Gary Claxton, the fellow nailing the vocal on "Wine Me Up" below, passed away earlier today. And here I was thinking it might almost be time for another Heybale album. No fair, world. No word on cause of death, but may he rest in peace. Our thoughts are with the family. Update: Austin360 reports Claxton took his own life. … [Read more...]
