CMA Awards Inoculation: Cool Country Stuff to Watch Online

With the CMA Awards set to air tomorrow, this is a good time to remind yourself that there is, after all, quite a bit of good, solid country music to be heard out there, far removed from the spectacle of celebrity presenters and splashy genre-busting duets (Natasha Bedingfield, Lionel Richie, and Kenny Loggins on a country show… finally) that inevitably accompanies a major-network industry showcase airing in primetime.

Here are a couple programs to help shore up your defenses.

Second, we have Kenny Vaughan’s V album release party at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville, featuring Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives with special guest Chris Scruggs. “Lovesick Blues” was Hank Williams’ first #1 hit, and a song that earned him six encores when he debuted on the Opry.* Coincidentally, I count 6 non-Hank versions in my collection: Charley Pride, Patsy Cline, Floyd Cramer, Dolly/Loretta/Tammy (Honky Tonk Angels), LeAnn Rimes, and George Strait.

* Blast from the past, discovered via Google: Brady Vercher on “Lovesick Blues” in the early days of The 9513. This was around the time I first found the site via the CMT Blog. And seeing it again gives me an idea…
