Bless ‘Em, Blame ‘Em – May 2

Vern GosdinBLESS…

Chelle Rose, for releasing one of the best “where’d THAT come from?” records of 2012. Ghost of Browder Holler, out yesterday, has even the New York Times taking notice. Guest spots by Ray Wylie Hubbard (who produced) and Elizabeth Cook don’t hurt, but it’s Rose’s own writing/performing voice and gutsy Appalachian rock style that make the biggest impression. In terms of roots music epiphanies, this reminds me of the first time I heard Chris Knight.

Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson, for heading into the studio to work on a follow-up to the delightful Rattlin’ Bones. Excited! (You can follow their progress via Chambers’ Facebook page.)

– Country blog My Kind of Country, for seeing a nice series on Vern Gosdin through to completion. And now they’ve named Marty Stuart as their spotlight artist for May. Good, solid choices.

Country California readers, for not making a big deal of our fourth birthday last month. We’re getting to the age where it’s really kind of embarrassing.

This guy, for pretending to be Brantley Gilbert. Really, of all the people to pretend to be!

Eric Church, for general (well-documented) douche-y behavior and denying that he has attempted to cultivate an outlaw image for himself even as he sells outlaw-branded merchandise in his online store.

Hank Jr., for welcoming Justin Timberlake into the country fold. Great… just great.

New posts, by email, whenever we’ve got ’em.

I can’t wait to hear that new Chambers and Nicholson record. ‘Rattlin’ Bones’ was killer.

And yes, cheers to the My Kind of Country crew for keeping up a stream of great content and spotlighting some fantastic artists! I’m stoked for Marty Stuart month.

You said the exact same thing I did when I saw the first ‘news’ item about Gilbert’s imitator!
And really, I like Eric Church’s music but his attitude is driving me away as a fan. It’s sad that someone so gifted as a songwriter is letting his ego become his trademark.

Mary Katherine is right on! Eric Church is a talented guy and can make good mainstream country music (though some bad music too). He’s not outlaw, he’s mainstream. But he’s a talented entertainer. His attitude is a shame. Just as he has won me over a bit with a few of his more recent songs, he reverts to making obnoxious comments. The apparent jabs at Miranda, Blake, et cetera were dubious, but I think the worst of the recent ones was the comment about not wanting 80 year old people at his concerts and about how he actively tries to make the environment uncomfortable for them.
