A Few Words on the New Look

A design overhaul wasn’t planned, but I sort of messed up the other one last night and took it as a sign that it was time to try something new (plus it would have taken more time to get the old one back than it took to set the new one up and it was the middle of the night, so I was tired). So, here we are. What do you think?

It will take some getting used to, but there’s more of the latest stuff on the front page and it’s hopefully displayed in a manner that will allow you to find what you need quickly. I’m looking at including an option to view whole posts in sequence as in the previous design, but it will take a while since I don’t exactly know what I’m doing.

There are still a number of changes to be made (including adding the blogroll back), so let me know of any problems you encounter or features you’d like to see implemented. We do now have threaded comments: if you hit the reply button below a comment, your comment will be posted right underneath as a response. That should make it a bit easier to carry on actual discussions in the comment sections.

That’s all the site news for now. Back to regular posts tomorrow. See you then.

  1. I like it. Very clean – and I’m a big fan of the 3 column pages.

  2. I find it a bit newspapery. It’s hard to know where to look.

  3. it looks nice, but i kind of like not having to click on the article to see the whole thing

  4. It is newspapery… well, magazine-y to be exact. These magazine themes are apparently all the rage now. I’ll try to use more images to anchor attention to the center column (which features all the latest posts in order, just like before: the difference is that now they’re not whole posts).

Which gets at Bobby’s point. I still want to figure out a way to give people the option of viewing whole posts all at once, but the up-side of the more condensed front page is that it’s easier find stuff beyond the latest one or two posts without having to scroll a lot. Ultimately, I think it’s a worthwhile trade-off.
