A Few Thoughts for a Wednesday

The number of successful Can You Duet duos (Joey + Rory, Caitlin & Will) is limited only by the number of possible abbreviations for "and."If the link in The 9513 roundup yesterday wasn't enticing enough for you, consider this piece from Melodic Sunburst doubly recommended.Willie Nelson is the only member of the Highwaymen who hasn't had a major multi-artist tribute album devoted to him... probably because every time someone's about to sing one of his songs, he pops up out of nowhere and … [Read more...]

A Country Gothic Playlist

Silver daggers. Unrequited love. Senseless murder. Graveyards. Encounters with Death. Crazy women wandering the hills. People frozen in various stages of grief. Gothic elements have long been an important part of bluegrass music, but they also show up from time to time in the country mainstream. With Halloween fast approaching, here's a playlist of spooky country to put you on edge.I'm only including one song per artist (some performers have lots more) and one artist per song (some songs … [Read more...]

Quotable Country – 10/05/08 Edition

[Click the dot after each quote to visit the original source.]I think the [new] record has more texture. 'Waking Up Laughing' was pretty simple musically. It was kind of stripped down. The Best Music Deal of the Year

I don't know the whole story behind this deal, but it appears that the entire Vern Gosdin boxed set, 40 Years of The Voice, due for release next month is already available for download from the major online music stores. Amazon MP3, iTunes, and eMusic all show it as having been available since the end of August. That's good news, but what's even more astonishing is that the set is less than $10 from both Amazon and iTunes. Amazon has the cheapest price at $8.99, but even at iTunes' steeper … [Read more...]

A Six Pack to Go (10/03/08 Edition)

Maybe he was just in a relationship with the main character of this song, a woman raised to hide her emotions at every turn. Even when she realizes that her husband's carousing is tearing apart their home, she doesn't bother confronting him about it: She didn't let him see it break her heart / She didn't let him see her fall apart. As though being … [Read more...]

TTTMS #4: Near Grammatical Misses

Things That Threaten My Sanity: Near Grammatical MissesObviously, country lyrics are not going to be written in the Queen's English. Different language rules apply, and that's fine by me. However, it still bugs me when a songwriter or singer leaves just one word out of place. Especially when the correct word would have fit just as well. Taylor Swift's line about “talk[ing] real slow 'cause it's late and his mama don't know” comes immediately to mind. “Talk real low” would sound virtually … [Read more...]
