Whitley In the Present Tense
Many of the male country artists who got their start in the 1990s – Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, and Tracy Lawrence among them – name Keith Whitley as one of their influences. There's no question that they were exposed to his music. During the late 80s and early 90s, it was nearly impossible for a country listener to not hear Whitley. When he died of alcohol poisoning in May 1989, he was riding high on a string of radio successes that included enduring hits like "Don't Close Your Eyes," … [Read more...]
Toby Keith Wants to Blow Your Head Off
Toby Keith talks to the San Jose Mercury News:Q: Does it ever frustrate you that your fans come to your shows more to party than to listen closely to music?A: No. I never had fun going to a concert and just sitting there and watching somebody stand and sing. . . . So I always want to come out with a bang and blow their heads off every time.Around the Bend is Randy Travis' highest-debuting album ever, showing up at #14 on the Billboard Top 200.It seems like everyone else loves Hayes Carll's … [Read more...]

A Six Pack to Go (7/24 Edition)
She Wouldn't Be Gone – Blake SheltonI've really warmed up to Blake's singing over the years, but I'm not crazy about this song. I like the verses, but the choruses sound like they were ripped from Lonestar's playbook. I don't think Blake needs to go that big.Shine – Matt StillwellThe production and subject matter remind me of “Hicktown.” The similarity is unfortunate, as – considered separately – I would actually prefer this song and performance. However, given the John Rich … [Read more...]
Sugarland Got It Right… Almost
I complain when an artist puts out an expanded version of an existing album to boost sales – I'm looking at you, Blake Shelton – so it only seems right that I should praise Sugarland for doing the opposite. The deluxe fan edition of Love on the Inside was released today, and it contains 5 bonus tracks that will not be on the standard release next Tuesday. Which begs the question: Who will wait an extra week to get an album with 5 fewer songs? Probably the same people who paid QVC $20+ … [Read more...]
Are Cash Tribute Bands in Poor Taste?
I like Johnny Cash as much as anyone, but I never got the chance to see him perform live. In a certain way, it might be fun to see a good Cash tribute band. It wouldn't make up for having never seen Johnny in person, of course, but it could still be fun to get together with a bunch of other people in a concert setting and appreciate his music. Tribute bands aren't the only way to do that – many acts cover Cash in their live shows – but a whole concert of his music? If the band didn't … [Read more...]
